I have never talked about sports before on this blog but have been a long time fan myself. This rant is based on a recent column by Jerry Sullivan of the Buffalo News.
Jerry Sullivan
Updated: 06/24/08 7:06 AM
A few days ago, I was listening to an update on sports radio and heard a reference to Citizens Bank Park. I searched my brain for a few seconds and came to a stunning realization. I had no idea who played there.
The White Sox? No, that’s U. S. Cellular Field. Reds? They play in Great American Ball Park. Pirates? PNC Park. Or is it PETCO? No, that’s the Padres. How about the Diamondbacks? Didn’t they change it from Bank One Ballpark? Yeah, but it’s Chase Field now.
Read the rest of “Corporations play games with names” at the Buffalo News
I always have hated the constant name changes of sports stadiums. I am with Jerry on trying to remember all the new stadium names. When I was a kid could rattle off the stadium names of most of the pro sports teams. Today? Forget it… I was shocked to learn even Wrigley Field has it’s naming rights up for sale now. The Cubs fans need to revolt or the Wrigley Company somehow or someway needs to secure the name again. I am not sure what would do if my beloved Boston Red Sox sold the name of Fenway Park to the highest bidder.
What Jerry Sullivan did not address in his column is what we can do about this? I think the solution is very simple. The only reason naming rights have value is because of the exposure they cause. Why does everyone including you and I, sports reporters like Jerry, or the media seem to be compelled to use the corporate name of any sports venue? Why can’t we all just adopt a common used alternative name for any corporate named stadium for our use?
In Buffalo here, the Sabres play at HSBC Arena but why not just refer to it as the original working name of the Crossroads Arena? The Buffalo Bisons baseball team has played at Pilot Field, North AmeriCare Park, and Dunn Tire Park. Come on now… Why can’t the local media just refer to it as the Downtown Park like most people do already and be done with it? No worries with the Buffalo Bills since the owner, Ralph Wilson just names it after himself.
It’s time we stop being held hostage to the lastest naming rights change of our favorite sports team’s home. If the people and media stopped using the corporate name then the naming rights would have no value anymore. The teams themselves really don’t need the revenue from naming rights or else they would just get players salaries under control. Just a idea…

John McCain, the Republican Presidential nominee has been rushed to a near by hospital with chest pains and apparently in cardiac arrest which was reported by CNN today. There will be a update on his condition later today which is the only information aids to McCain have released so far.

OK OK… I totally made up the headline and the first paragraph and this is just going to be one of my rants. John McCain is in excellent health (benefit of the doubt here) as of right now but that is subject to change. In fact, I will use this post as a place holder in the unlikely event McCain is elected President. Really at 71 years old (72 in August) what else could we expect during his term? Being that Dick Cheney is still VP we can say George Bush’s biggest accomplishment as President so far is not dying. McCain’s choice as running mate will need to be a sound one considering his age. Condoleezza Rice? Now you can see my point here.
The Republican party faithful like their candidates old and pasty white but what about the rest of us? I think the oldest generation has held power long enough and has messed things up real good for us all so maybe it’s time to pass the touch. We need a candidate who will get the America people excited again and McCain who would be better suited for a Viagra commercial is not it.
Some people would counter and say McCain has experience… I don’t know about you but someone who is pro-war, embraces the failed currant President, has flip-flopped his positions, and gets confused between Sunni and Shia (video) is not the the kind of experience we should be looking for. Google the words McCain and confused when you have some time on your hand. Really, do we need another sitting President with Alzheimer’s?
Let’s not forget McCain has not really released his medical records to the public either. We can look beyond McCain’s physical health or if he can get a erection for a second but what about possible mental issues? This is a man who has been held captive and tortured in war so who knows what made up demons lurk in his mind. It is well known that McCain easily loses his temper with friends and even called his own wife a c*nt in front of other people. He just does not appear stable enough to be able to handle the pressures of being President.
I wish McCain had beaten out Bush in 2000 but now his time has already pasted. Sorry, we do need to question if McCain is really up to snuff to be our next President. I very well could be to hard on the old man but what do you think?

I must be in a mood because feel like being offensive today. I seen this image on the Human Rights of America blog the other day and feel like sharing…

On the blog a image with the words “Keep Your Religion Out Of My Bedroom” was just above it but I am speaking about this in broader terms here.
Now first off I am not really saying Jesus is a Nazi but that the radical Christian Conservative movement in this country very much is “fascist like” when they try to inject their religious beliefs into our political system. What ever happened to the concept of separation of church and state? I get real worried when I read comments on other blogs were someone states we should make laws based on or follow “a Bible value system”. I guess we would have to pick and choose what values since many in the Bible are part of nobodies value system. I also always found it odd that Jesus lived in a time and place where slavery was a part of life but he never specify condemned it. OK, enough of the Bible nonsense…
Last year I read the excellent book “Kingdom Coming” by Buffalo native Michelle Goldberg which really opened my eyes on the Christian Nationalism movement. She actually traveled across the country meeting the people of this movement and going to their churches. I highly recommend her book. Sure people have the right to believe what they wish but a real concern is when they indoctrinate their children with this garbage. Watch the documentary Jesus Camp and it will make you sick. When your church starts using the words “we are fighting a war” and you are “a army of soldiers” be afraid.
Of course religion has infected the current Presidential race. John McCain, in breaking news finally has rejected the endorsement of Pastor John Hagee (video of this wacko on a previous post of mine) and also now his “spiritual adviser” Pastor Rod Parsley who recently called Islam a “conspiracy of spiritual evil”. The media is acting like these kind of comments from Mr. Parsley are something new. Sigh…
Earlier in the campaign a comment from Mitt Romney really disturbed me in which he said -”Freedom requires religion, just as religion requires freedom…”. While religion does require freedom the opposite certainly is not true. I am no less free because I bow to no man made religion but thanks.
What I am really trying to say here is can religious people keep their faith in their bedroom, please?
I hope the author of the Human Rights of America blog comments here and lets me know where he found the above image or if he designed it himself.
While I encourage discussion from all sides, any Christians who decide they want to comment with less then “Christian words” on this post keep in mind this blog is not a free for all. Please refer to my About page and read the rules of conduct for this blog.

I was browsing the latest WordPress stories and came across a totally idiotic post. The title “Obama, the proabort” really set me off. If was just another of the increasingly negative slams against Barack Obama the emerging Democratic and Presidential front runner, it would not cause me to pause. The problem is a pro-abortion stance really does not exist…
Nobody who supports abortion rights believes it is the first option but is the last. No this not the same as when George said war in Iraq would be the last option. Why is so hard to understand that being pro-choice means that abortion can still not be a option at all for someone? The reason the pro-life crowd likes the term pro-abortion and not pro-choice is because it clouds the whole issue and helps them make their losing argument. Pro-abortion sounds more evil if not really accurate. I have been guilty of kinda the same thing when say pro-life people really are just pro-birth but that’s a another story.
I also took issue in the post using the term “radical”. Since when is someone a “radical” who supports Roe vs. Wade? It is the law of the land and the majority of the people do agree with the decision so it would not seem so “radical”.
Rant over and also like to disclose I am a recovering Catholic myself.

Damn, I have finally joined the ranks of bloggers. What would drive someone to do this? Well maybe six years of a corrupt and incompetent administration or the taking over of everything and anything by Corporate America or the mainstream media that ignores what as been happening. I think is time for me to add my voice to the growing blogosphere that will shape the coming millennium. The best way can express why I have started to write can be summed up by the recently pasted Gerald R. Ford who in his 1975 state of the Union address he remarked “I must say to you that the state of the Union is not good… ” and this is more true then ever. My writing skills are suspect but hope my words open the eyes of couple of souls somewhere.
So know just average guy here that needs his rants to be heard so maybe will not go totally insane. I would describe myself politically as an independent and progressive with touch of socialist tendencies. I could care less for Democrats and even more so for Republicans. When will we reform the system to have a true Democracy with more then two voices?
Currently I am working in the IT field so yes somewhat of computer geek. Long time Windows power user here but have realized we are losing control over our technology to proprietary hardware and software and need to get back to the freedom present at the beginning of the PC revolution. So expect to see posts on hacking (not the media demonization of) , open source, Linux, net neutrality, and my anti-DRM stance.
We need new ideas to overwrite what we have come to believe as truth. Why do I still hear the term “liberal media” from the right wing blow holes of talk radio? To those who do not have a clue the “liberal media” in regards to the mainstream media ceased to exist when Ronald Reagan allowed corporate monopolization of our TV, radio, and print media some twenty years ago. The proliferation of individual contributions to media via blogs has started a revolution which is adding new voices that need to be heard more then ever. Another idea that needs to be changed is our definition of “supporting our troops”. How the hell did starting a unneeded war justified by lies and now a President who wants to escalate said war get off saying people who don’t agree with him don’t support our troops? If I was over in Iraq with my ass on the line and my buddies dying the support I would want is bring me home for God’s sakes! Big media is finally seeing what mistake this has been if but four years to late. New ideas will free us from being the sheep most of us have become!
Ideas that continue the battles between liberals and conservatives, whites and blacks, and secularists and fundamentalists only cause us not to see the real problems in America today. We are at time when the people with power and wealth are stealing even more of both from the rest of the people. We can not have a true free society if only the rich and the corporations have a say. If the middle class vanishes what chance will the poor have to move up and experience the American dream? So if we don’t embrace new ideas and turn back the attacks on our freedoms, economic opportunities, and democratic government all will be lost and America be reduced to a footnote in history. The last resort might be a Revolution to fix our broken system! As Thomas Jefferson once said..Periodic revolution, “at least once every 20 years,” was “a medicine necessary for the sound health of government.” We would seem to be somewhat over due… I have no problem being part of this possible coming Revolution. Wondering now if this blog will end up getting me on FBI watch list?
OK maybe been little deep in this rant but thinking you can see where I am coming from and will be going with this blog and hoping to pick up couple of readers for the ride. I will promise right now not to talk about my cat in this blog. Also doing this for the girls which is going to be nice..bloggers do get girls right?
