Read the document on this Constitution Day…

Posted by MJ on September 17, 2008

I have been thinking what would be better then to actually read the Constitution itself on Constitution Day? I have read it many times before but it is always good to brush up it. Every American should take the time to refresh themselves on the supreme law of the land. I suggest a hypertext document for easier reading like this one from the national archives.

Do you know today is Constitution Day?

Posted by MJ on September 17, 2008

Unfortunately most Americans does not know that day, Sept. 17 is in fact Constitution Day. It is not a well known holiday but “we the people” should celebrate and promote it more. More people have some idea that the Bush Administration has been pissing on our Constitution over the past eight years.

Common Cause is a nonpartisan organization which is a “vehicle for citizens to make their voices heard in the political process and to hold their elected leaders accountable to the public interest”.

They have a project currently going on called Recapture the Flag which is trying to get all candidates running for Congress to sign this pledge to make our government based on the rule of law again…

If elected, I pledge to Renew America’s Promise:

* I promise to end torture, respect human rights, and restore America’s reputation in the world.

* I promise to respect the rule of law and to fiercely challenge anyone who seeks to undermine the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

* I promise to root out corruption, special interest abuses and partisan prejudice in the administration of justice.

* I promise to hold to account – without exception – anyone who breaks the law or violates the public trust.

* I promise to protect personal freedom by rejecting warrantless spying, stifling of dissent, and other affronts to individual liberty.

You would think all the candidates running for office would sign this pledge but not all have and you can look up who has and who has not…here. Citizens can also sign the petition in support of this cause.

Sen. Russell Feingold (D-WI), former Sen. Lincoln Chafee (R-RI) are supporting this Common Cause campaign and you can listen to them speak at the press conference…
