Democratic National Convention – Open Thread
Posted by MJ on August 24, 2008

History soon will be made as the first African-American in Barack Obama will be nominated for President at the Democratic National Convention that starts tomorrow in Denver and will run until August 28. Hillary Clinton, the first viable woman Presidential candidate and runner-up will also have a prominent role at the convention.
I created this open thread so interested parties can discuss the Democrat convention. This post will remain open until the end of the convention and then will be closed for comments. Notes about this forum…
-Please only relevant comments about the events, news, and speeches at the convention
-Attending the convention or are a delegate? We very much would like to hear your thoughts and eye witness accounts on the Denver convention
-I suggest anyone commenting to refer to the About page and the rules of conduct for this blog
The DemConWatch is a great blog to keep updated while the convention is going on so check it out.
Let the discussion begin!

THE critical thing to look for as we go into this week will be the behavior of the Clintons. Personally, I cannot believe that Hillary will deliver a speech that will not be in some way self serving. It’s going to be a fun week for us political junkies!

I think Hillary and Bill will do their part and try to bring their hard core supporters on board to unify the party. The question is if the crazy PUMAs (you know who I am talking about since a number have successful blogs right here on WordPress) will start to act like they really are Democrats or continue to make us wonder if some are really Republicans in disguise fueling the flames.

A PUMA-like person was encountered by Chris Matthews on Hardball tonight. In retrospect he called her a “wacko”. LOL Her insistence that Barack was “registered” as a Muslim in grammar school was a major contributor to Chris’ assessment.
This first night of the convention was inspiring in so many ways. I write more about it on my blog but bottom line, it was a feel-good night for America.

Despite my doubts, Hillary Clinton delivered the message she needed to deliver tonight. Bravo!

I think she hit it out of the ballpark tonight. The media still will spread doubts…

I doubt the PUMAs will start to say nice things about Obama but real Democrats are united.

Bill almost blew it last night by implying that Barack needed Biden to be a complete package but he redeemed himself by comparing Obama’s run to his own run in 1992 when he was called inexperienced.

Obama’s night. What can I say? Eloquent, thrilling, historic.

Ted Kennedy sounded better than he has in a long time. I’ll refrain from all kinds of sarcastic remarks and simply say that that’s great, I continue to wish him the best in regards to his health. Caroline Kennedy was great.
Michelle Obama’s speech was actually quite good.
John Kerry’s was pretty bad, except for his run of comparisons to Senator McCain and Candidate McCain, and his self-deprecating “talk about being for it before he was against it” bit. Mostly, though, he sounded like he was whining about 2004. Kerry probably shouldn’t use the term “swift-boating.” It sounds petty when he says it, even if he’s right.
I missed Hillary Clinton and the first half of Bill Clinton, and haven’t bothered to look for the rest, so I won’t comment there.
Al Gore was borderline awful … like Kerry, he seemed to be focused on the election he didn’t win.
I have to admit, I didn’t catch Sen. Obama, either.

My most recent post has the video of Obama’s acceptance speech. It would be worth it for you to check it out. Be careful since he may turn to you into a Godless heathen pagan.

Wait … Godless? I thought that the Obama speech was supposed to make me believe that he is God. That’s what Hannity says, anyway.
I’m so confused …
